Management of Wind Power Variations in Electricity System Investment Models

Abstract Accounting for variability in generation and load strategies to tackle cost-efficiently are key components of investment models modern electricity systems. This work presents evaluates the Hours-to-Decades (H2D) model, which builds upon a novel approach account manage variations system covering several days, variation management is particular relevance wind power integration. The model discretizes time dimension capacity expansion problem into 2-week segments, thereby exploiting parallel processing capabilities computers. Information between these segments then exchanged consensus loop. method evaluated with regard its ability impacts load, regional resources trade, inter-annual linkages. Compared fully connected time, proposed provides solutions an increase total cost no more than 1.12%, while reducing memory requirements 1/26’th those original problem. For problems concerning two regions or more, it found that H2D requires 1–2% calculation relative when solved on computer capability.
